Ford Taurus Service Manual: Anti-Theft - Perimeter

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Anti-Theft - Without Intelligent Access (IA)

Overview

The perimeter alarm system deters unauthorized entry to the vehicle by sounding the horn and flashing all the turn signals and interior courtesy lamps when an unauthorized entry occurs. The horn and lamps activate for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, the horn stops sounding, but the lamps continue to flash for up to 5 minutes.

The panic alarm operates similar to the perimeter alarm, but is only activated by the panic button on the RKE transmitter. Refer to Section 501-14A for panic alarm operation.

Vehicles with the police package may or may not be equipped with the perimeter alarm feature, even though a hood ajar switch and anti-theft inhibit switch may be present.

Perimeter Alarm

The BCM controls the operation of the perimeter alarm. It monitors inputs from the RKE system (includes the keyless entry keypad), the power door lock system, PATS and the ignition status to determine when to arm the perimeter alarm.

The BCM monitors all of the door ajar switches, the luggage compartment lid ajar switch, the hood ajar switch and the ignition status to determine when to activate the perimeter alarm. When the BCM detects an input indicating an unauthorized entry into the vehicle, the BCM activates the perimeter alarm by sounding the horn and flashing all the turn signals and interior courtesy lamps at regular intervals.

The BCM monitors the RKE system (includes the keyless entry keypad), the luggage compartment lid anti-theft inhibit switch (if equipped) and PATS to determine when to disarm the perimeter alarm.

For vehicles equipped with a luggage compartment lid anti-theft inhibit switch (vehicles with a luggage compartment lid key cylinder), the perimeter alarm only disarms for the luggage compartment access. The perimeter alarm is still armed for the hood and all the doors. After the luggage compartment lid is closed, the perimeter alarm automatically arms after a 20-second countdown.

Arming the Perimeter Alarm

The perimeter alarm is ready to arm any time the ignition is off. The alarm system pre-arms when:

  • pressing the lock button on a RKE transmitter.
  • pressing the door lock control switch to the lock position with the door open, then closing the door.
  • touching the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons simultaneously on the keyless entry keypad.

Once the system is pre-armed, there is a 20-second countdown before the perimeter alarm is armed. Each entry point to the vehicle (hood, door and luggage compartment lid) is armed separately and must be closed before that entry point begins the 20-second countdown to become armed. If all entry points are closed, the turn signals flash indicating that all entry points are entering the 20-second countdown.

Perimeter Alarm Activation

The perimeter alarm has a 12-second delay when the driver door is unlocked and opened using a key in the door lock cylinder. During the delay, a chime sounds and "TO STOP ALARM START VEHICLE" displays in the message center. If the perimeter alarm is not disarmed within the 12-second delay, the alarm activates.

The perimeter alarm activates when:

  • the driver door is opened without first receiving an unlock command from a RKE transmitter or keyless entry keypad, and the 12-second delay has expired.
  • any passenger door, luggage compartment lid, or the hood is opened without first receiving an electronic unlock command from a RKE transmitter, keyless entry keypad or using a correctly cut key to open the luggage compartment lid.
  • the ignition transitions to RUN without a valid PATS key read received.

The perimeter alarm only activates 10 times per arming cycle. After that, the alarm does not activate. To enable the perimeter alarm again, disarm the perimeter alarm and then arm it again.

Disarming the Perimeter Alarm

The perimeter alarm disarms when:

  • pressing the unlock button on a programmed RKE transmitter.
  • pressing the luggage compartment lid release button on a programmed RKE transmitter.
  • using a programmed key to change the ignition to RUN.
  • entering the correct vehicle unlock code on the keyless entry keypad.

The perimeter alarm can be deactivated by pressing the panic button on a RKE transmitter. All of the lamps stop flashing and the horn stops sounding, but the alarm is still armed.

Component Description

Hood Ajar Switch

The hood ajar switch is a single pole switch that is normally closed when the hood is closed, routing the voltage signal to ground. When the hood is opened, the hood ajar switch opens, interrupting the signal to indicate an open hood.

The BCM sends a voltage reference signal to the hood ajar switch, and based on the input, the BCM determine if the hood is open or closed.

Luggage Compartment Lid Anti-Theft Inhibit Switch

The luggage compartment lid anti-theft inhibit switch is a single pole switch that is normally open, interrupting the voltage signal sent to it. When the luggage compartment lid key cylinder is rotated to open the luggage compartment lid, the switch closes, routing the signal to ground. This is interpreted as authorized access to the luggage compartment using a correctly cut key.

The BCM sends a voltage signal to the luggage compartment lid anti-theft inhibit switch. Based on the inputs from the luggage compartment lid anti-theft inhibit switch and the luggage compartment lid ajar switch, the BCM determines whether or not authorized access to the luggage compartment occurs.

Door Ajar Switch

The door ajar switch is a single pole switch that is normally closed when the door is closed, routing the voltage signal to ground. When the door is opened, the door ajar switch opens, interrupting the signal to indicate an open door.

The BCM uses the door ajar switch input for various systems, such as the courtesy lamps, instrument cluster warning indicators and messages, and perimeter alarm operation.

Luggage Compartment Lid Ajar Switch

The luggage compartment lid ajar switch is a single pole switch that is normally closed when the luggage compartment lid is closed, routing the voltage signal to ground. When the luggage compartment lid is opened, the luggage compartment lid ajar switch opens, interrupting the signal to indicate an open luggage compartment lid.

The BCM uses the luggage compartment lid ajar switch input for various systems, such as the courtesy lamps, instrument cluster warning indicators and messages, and perimeter alarm operation.
